The State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing (herein abbreviated as the Laboratory) was established in the late 80' s during the China's resurgence period through rigorous inter-ministerial debates on a scheme proposed by the State Planning Commission of the Government of China, and was funded by the Ministry of Sciences and Technology. The research management and operation quickly took shape pioneered by the personnel (notably Professors Lin Shixiong, Yang Guanghua) on the space of the old laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing in University of Petroleum, and developed rapidly,. In 1990, upon on-site review the Inter-Ministerial Inspection Committee pronounced the completion of the establishment. Since then, the Laboratory has opened its door to researchers from national and international communities to carry out basic and applied research.
The Laboratory located in China University of Petroleum ( Beijing ) and CUP (Huadong). At present, the Laboratory consists of 39 permanent faculty members including 28 professors (among them one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering ), 3 staff technicians, and 2 management personnel.
The mission of the Laboratory has been broadly defined to conduct basic research in Heavy Oil recovery , processing and utilization. The research areas are centered, but not limited, on Chemistry of Heavy Oil, New processing for Heavy Oil upgrading, New catalytic materials and catalyst for Heavy Oil processing, Clean fuel production from Heavy Oil and high value utilization of Heavy Oil as well as the interactive and relevant subjects. Within this basis, interdisciplinary and cross-boarder interactions are commonly and extensively practiced to carry fundamental research on structures and reaction mechanisms of Heavy Oil.
Substantial achievements in the fields of Chemistry of Heavy Oil lifted the Laboratory's visibility in the national and international theaters, especially in Canada , which has the No. 1 production and advanced academic level of Heavy Oil on the world. Jun.2,2004,The Aide-memoire of Ministry of Science and Technology of China - Alberta , Canada noted the cooperation of the Laboratory and AERI. At the same year, "Centre for Heavy Oil Technologies" was built by the Laboratory and University of Calgary , Canada . And, withal, The Laboratory has successfully organized and executed a number of national and international scientific conferences, including three international symposia of Heavy Oil Processing and Utilization. In these years, the Laboratory subscribe eight successive plans of international cooperation with Canada Syncrude Co. , National Research institute of Canada, AERI ( Canada ) , NOVA Chemical Co., University of British Columbia ,HTI ( USA ) and catalyse Research Center of Hokkaido University.
The Laboratory is administered according to the general guidelines prescribed by "The Governance of State Key Laboratory Operations", and is committed to pursue the ideal of creativity, esprit de corps, dynamism and excellence.
Up to date, the concerted efforts of the faculty, staff and students in the recent years have culminated in substantial achievements in the fields of research results, training in research personnel, and scientific collaboration-exchanges. In 1999 and again in 2004, the Laboratory has been reviewed and ranked by an external committee of experts organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in the both occasions.
